How to host a Craig Johnson Gathering
The NRHA Handbook states, “The best reined horse should be willingly guided with little or no apparent resistance.” Craig’s positive performance series clinics will put you on the path to success by raising your level of easy with proven methods that create a more willing horse and enhance your riding experience.
Advanced training is built around the simple idea of going right, left, forward, and back REALLY well. It doesn’t matter if you are a “Reiner” or a devoted horseperson in any other discipline. Reining is much more than a sport; it’s a way to train all horses to have a willing attitude, amazing footwork, and no resistance. The concepts apply to creating the connection you have been searching for.
You will find elsewhere in our website clinic section, a complete listing of all of our information gatherings with full descriptions. We have our general horsemanship gatherings, Willingly Guided, as well as No Resistance. Then you will notice our more discipline specific events such as Ranch Pleasure, Cowboy Dressage, and of course our signature event, Let It Rein. We also offer the Positive Performance gathering that gives you a slightly less detailed, yet popular combination.
All clinics are designed to introduce the seven factors of reining concepts which are essential for all riders to learn and all horses to perform. While each clinic is slightly different and tailored to those riders in attendance, you can expect the clinic format to help each horse and rider combination to have a better understanding of the “next step” in furthering their horsemanship. The riders will come away with a clear understanding of what they can now “do” with their “natural” foundation. This is about teaching the horse. No matter the breed or discipline, through this program it is our intent to foster reining fundamentals as a unifying link for all equine sports. The basic maneuvers serve the FOUNDATION of all Western horse training and as an ADVANCED DEVELOPMENT AID to English programs.
POSITIVE PERFORMANCE RIDING
The program demonstrates how reining foundations and the easy to understand fundamentals enhance other riding disciplines such as dressage, jumping, cutting, working cattle, barrel racing, team penning, ranch pleasure, cowboy dressage, etc.
The concepts of reining offer a strategic avenue to unify all riding disciplines through multi- faceted maneuvers. It can make everything work better.
Let us know what month or months would be best for you. We will then check and find out what weekends are available for a clinic during your timeframe. We’ll work with you to find the right dates for your event.
We have lowered our 2015 clinic fees to $1500.00 per day for a 2 day weekend event plus air travel and accommodations for Craig. An additional $350 booking fee/deposit is due at time of booking or no later than 90 days prior to the event, depending on the date of your event.
The clinic host can decide how to divide the clinic fees among the riders. You could divide the cost of all clinic fees equally among the riders and ride free or you could charge a bit more per rider and make a profit. You have maximum flexibility in organizing the clinic to suit your area.
(Example: If you charged $250 per day, per rider with a 10 rider minimum, you would receive $5000, less the $350 booking fee. This would generally cover our fee plus expenses of airfare, meals and a place to stay. *If you book additional riders over the 10 rider minimum, all of those fees would then be yours.) Of course we encourage you to set the charges where you feel comfortable and hope you make a nice profit.
Once Craig’s daily clinic fees and expenses are met, the clinic host will keep all other fees such as auditor fees. We do suggest that you charge your clinic riders enough in clinic fees to be able to cover any unexpected expenses.
It is strongly recommended that you obtain ALL of the clinic rider’s fees well in advance of the clinic. However, we know horse people. Don’t panic too far in advance. There are always those last minute additions.
Airline tickets, lodging or hotel accommodations, meals and car rental expenses are covered by the clinic host as necessary.
Coach is OK. Please e-mail the flight itinerary to Craig directly at email@example.com to review before purchasing the ticket. We like Craig to have as few airline stops as possible. Dallas Fort Worth airport is the best airport for Craig to fly in and out of. Ideally, Craig would like to arrive in the late afternoon on the day before your clinic, and depart just after your clinic is over on Sunday when possible.
Many hosts have Craig as a guest in their home. If this is not available, the clinic host should book a hotel room and provide transportation. Craig enjoys most foods although he does not eat fruit. Breakfast could be as simple as plain white toast with smooth peanut butter. Another good choice would be Frosted Mini Wheats or regular Grape Nuts. Craig is not a coffee drinker, but he likes regular or Diet Coke. Lunch and dinner are easy and could be anything.

I can set the Online Registration form so that payments can be mailed directly to you or we can make PayPal an option with payments coming directly to Craig and the remainder of the fees would be paid to you after his fee is met.
Weekend Clinics – 2 Day Format Preferred (3 Day Formats limited)
9:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Other arrangements can be made as needed.
The clinic format is flexible.
The baseline consists of 3 hours in the a.m. and 3 hours in the p.m. with a 1 ½-2 hour break for lunch between, with a maximum of 15 riders.
Craig will start each day at about 9:00 am. Each rider should be saddled, warmed up and ready to go at 9:00 am. The clinic day will run from 9:00 am to 12:00. We will break for about 1 to 1 ½ hours for lunch. He will start again at about 1:30, go another 3 hours, and end at about 4:30pm.
Other options are welcome. For example, the day can be split into separate a.m. /p.m. sessions to accommodate various rider interests. The a.m. session can address the Willingly Guided program for riders seeking an introduction to the benefits of reining, while the p.m. session focuses on improving horse and rider performance for riders preparing for competitions and shows.
Your clinic participants will gain the most out of riding in a Craig Johnson clinic if they bring their most advanced horse. These are not “Problem Horse/Colt Start” clinics. Craig certainly can, and will, address any issues that your riders may have. The horse should be able to usually pick up either lead that the rider asks for and the rider should know what lead that their horse is on.
Craig usually recommends having about 15 riders or so.
- Covered fenced arena is preferable.
- A 100 X 200 ft arena is the ideal size. Slightly larger or smaller is OK.
- Host is responsible for daily arena dust control.
- Electrical outlets for sound system.
This arrangement indicates the clinic host’s obligation for the entire amount due based on the rates and payment schedule listed above. ALL Clinic booking fees/deposits are non-refundable.
Once the clinic deposit is received, the clinic will be posted to www.craigjohnsoninternational.com and may be included in any promotions, Facebook posts or ads generated by Craig Johnson at no additional cost.
Clinic hosts can e-mail me a short written promo on their clinic to be included in Craig’s monthly newsletter at firstname.lastname@example.org
We suggest that you create a flyer that can be put up in your area as well as emailed to regional association, saddle clubs, and horse enthusiastic groups. Also email your flyer to us and we will post it on all of our pages as well.
Clinic hosts can generate their own paid advertising, as they desire at no cost to Craig Johnson.
